Big Wood River Valley

HAILEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) Warmer temperatures may feel nice, but they are bringing nerve-wracking side effects to the Wood River Valley as officials tell the people of Hailey to prepare for flooding.

The Big Wood River has already overflown and is reaching street level.

One house on the river is getting a lot of attention. It looks like an island in the runoff, but Hailey’s fire chief said that’s part of the design. The house is raised to allow flood waters to run underneath and around it.

Other homes have to prepare with sandbags.

Fire Chief Craig Aberbach said he doesn’t know how much more the water will rise.

That’s the million dollar question, he said. It all depends on the weather.

“The worst thing that could happen is we'll continue to have higher temperature days, higher temperature nights, preceded by some heavier precipitation, which could make for the perfect storm for a flood event in this area,” Aberbach said.

The river is only one concern for the city.

They are also worried about ground water levels rising and flooding basements.

Aberbach encourages you to visit city and countywebsites to get information on prepping your home.
