He erased the 49-year-old record at the 94th Malaysian Open Athletics Championship on Tuesday, 18 July.
The 19-year-old sprinter from Melaka smashed the 200m national record of 20.92s set by Tan Sri Dr M. Jegathesan at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
He set the new record with an impressive run of 20.90s to win the event at the 94th Malaysian Open Athletics Championship.
Jonathan Nyepa of Sarawak grabbed silver with a time of 21.29s while G Aravinn Thevar of Perak ran 21.31s to take bronze.
Khairul also set a new meet record with the time, beating the old mark of 20.94s set by Kento Terada from Japan in 1996

Speaking to reporters after his historic win, Khairul said he would now focus on the SEA Games, which will be held at the same venue between 19 August and 30 August.
“All praise to God for giving me the strength to break the National record. I wish to thank my parents and coach Mohd Poad Md Kassim for their support. This will give me extra confidence to do well in the SEA Games next month,” said Khairul as quoted by Malaysiakini.
The teen also broke the nation's 100m record last year

Khairul owns the Malaysian record in 100m with a time of 10.18s. He erased Sarawakian Watson Nyambek’s previous mark of 10.30s.
