Update on the US Internet Industry: Twitter, PayPal, and Alexa
Google Assistant, the voice-based virtual assistant from Alphabet’s (GOOGL) Google, appears to be the most intelligent in its class. At least two recent tests have shown that Google Assistant, the technology that powers the Google Home smart speaker, is better than its rivals at processing more questions and supplying a greater number of correct answers.
In a recent study by digital marketing consultant Stone Temple, Google Assistant beat rivals such as Microsoft’s (MSFT) Cortana, Apple’s (AAPL) Siri, and Amazon’s (AMZN) Alexa in a contest that involved taking 5,000 random queries.

Google Assistant answered 68.1% of the questions posed to it and supplied complete and correct answers to 91.0% of the questions. Cortana answered 56.0% of the questions, and 82.0% of its answers were correct.
Apple’s Siri answered 22.0% of the questions, and 62% of its answers were accurate. Alexa answered 21.0% of the 5,000 questions asked and 87% of its answers were correct.
Google Assistant also prevailed in an earlier study by Loup Ventures that pitted it against Siri. The studies excluded Facebook’s (FB) new digital assistant, dubbed M.
Alexa is the technology behind Amazon’s smart speaker device, Echo. According to researchers, Alexa has widely outsold the competition in the smart home hub market.
Although Echo seems to have a wide early lead, that could change if the studies by Stone Temple and Loup Ventures are any guide. Because consumers are buying voice assistants to help them answer random questions, Google Home could have stronger customer appeal because of Google Assistant’s ability to answer queries accurately.
